Louisiana's Only Ice-Cream Plant Begins Production

(Baton Rouge, LA, January 31,2008) Louisiana’s only ice cream plant began producing ice cream this week at the Kleinpeter Farms Dairy on Airline Highway in Baton Rouge. Kleinpeter Ice Cream is available in chocolate and vanilla now, and more flavors will be added over the next several weeks. Those will include Homemade Ponchatoula Strawberry, Buttered Pecan, and Pralines and Cream.

The ice cream began rolling out this week to stores in Baton Rouge and the surrounding areas.

“We love our cows. We love our community. We love our customers, and we hope you will love our ice cream,” said Jeff Kleinpeter, President.

Kleinpeter Farms is emphasizing the use of Louisiana products in its ice cream.

“Our ice cream is locally flavored, through and through. The sugar is Louisiana cane sugar. The strawberries are Ponchatoula strawberries, Bergeron’s Pecans in New Roads is supplying the pecans, and the pralines come from Aunt Sally’s Pralines of New Orleans,” said Kleinpeter.

In addition to milk from Kleinpeter’s own dairy farm in St. Helena Parish, the ice cream plant uses milk from 20 other Louisiana dairies.

Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain, D.V.M., commended Kleinpeter for its commitment to using Louisiana-grown and Louisiana-made ingredients in the ice cream.

“What a great day it is when one of Louisiana’s leading dairies creates a new product that not only tastes good but also benefits our agriculture producers,” Strain said. “Over the past decade, we’ve lost more than 320 dairies in Louisiana. The only way we can put an end to this downward trend is for more businesses to follow Kleinpeter’s lead and commit to using fresh, Louisiana- grown or Louisiana-made ingredients in their products.

“I congratulate Jeff and his family on what they have accomplished and wish them much success as they embark on this new venture.”

“We tried to make our ice cream the best tasting anywhere, and we hope that’s the main reason you buy it. We also want you to know that buying Kleinpeter ice cream adds to the economic health of other family-owned businesses in Louisiana,” Kleinpeter added.

The family-owned dairy has been producing milk products for southern Louisiana families for nearly 100 years. Since May, consumers have been able to go to the Kleinpeter Farms Web site (www.kleinpeterdairy.com) and vote for their favorite flavors and sizes.

The addition of the ice cream plant to Kleinpeter’s existing milk products operations adds 20 permanent full time jobs and six permanent part time jobs to the Baton Rouge economy.

The $4 million, 7500-square-foot ice cream plant was built with state of the art, energy-efficient features designed to protect the environment while producing quality ice cream. The ice cream plant is insulated with freezer panels and lit with high-efficiency light bulbs. All freezer doors open to inside foyers instead of outside. Heat from the refrigeration process is captured and reused to preheat boiler water used in sanitation.

The Kleinpeter family has a long standing commitment to conserve resources and protect the environment. When the St Helena Parish dairy farm was built, Kleinpeter installed state of the art conservation practices without being required to by any government agency. The Louisiana Wildlife Federation cited those practices in naming the company Louisiana’s Conservation Corporation of the Year in 2007.

For its humane treatment of cows, Kleinpeter received a rare certification from the American Humane Association. Kleinpeter Farms was the first dairy in Louisiana to become certified as American Humane Certified by the American Humane Association.
